If you use a portion of your home for business purposes, you may be able to take a home office deduction whether you are self-employed or an employee. Expenses that you may be able to deduct for business use of the home may include the business portion of real estate taxes, mortgage interest, rent, utilities, insurance, depreciation, painting and repairs.
You can claim this deduction for the business use of a part of your home only if you use that part of your home regularly and exclusively:

* As your principal place of business for any trade or business
* As a place to meet or deal with your patients, clients or customers in the normal course of your trade or business

Generally, the amount you can deduct depends on the percentage of your home that you used for business. Your deduction will be limited if your gross income from your business is less than your total business expenses.

If you use a separate structure not attached to your home for an exclusive and regular part of your business, you can deduct expenses related to it.

If you are self-employed, use Form 8829 to figure your home office deduction and report those deductions on line 30 of Schedule C, Form 1040. There are special rules for qualified daycare providers and for persons storing business inventory or product samples.

If you are an employee, you have additional requirements to meet. The regular and exclusive business use must be for the convenience of your employer.

I quickly glanced over the sites you listed..I think the second one would be most helpful for the average person and the first and third are useless…the last one..well..you can get this advice here from people..I don't think looking for a site that offers both home improvement and decorating is realistic as these are two very different subjects. If you want professional advice, then hire a professional..you get what you pay for. Being a freelance writer, I think you should be able to draw upon your own views.

I always do research before I hire anyone to do work for me whether it be for my businesses, rentals, automotive repairs or around the house. I check out automotive repair shops to see whether they are AAA approved or if there are any complaints against them registered with the Better Business Bureau. Besides checking the BBB, I check out contractors to see whether their license numbers are legitimately registered with our state licensing board. (You'd be surprised at how many "contractors" use bogus license numbers. Our state maintains a website that makes it easy to check them out.) I also make certain that contractors are bonded, have insurance and worker's compensation. I try to make sure that they don't hire illegal aliens, but that is getting to be more difficult. I always ask for references and examples of their work. When I recently hired a painting contractor, I physically drove to the addresses they gave me, spoke to their clients and inspected their work. Also, I always ask for an estimate, get at least three bids and a written contract. It really is the contract that protects you legally.
